TYPE F ATF

The High-Static Friction Solution for Classic Ford Drivetrains

Close

Phillips 66® Type F ATF is a specialized, non-friction modified automatic transmission fluid specifically engineered for older Ford Motor Company vehicles and select industrial applications. Unlike modern fluids that prioritize "smooth" or "slippery" shifting through friction modifiers, Type F is designed to provide the high static friction required for the rapid, positive clutch engagement characteristic of vintage Ford gearboxes. This formula is built on high-quality base stocks to ensure thermal stability and resistance to oxidation, protecting legacy internal components that operate under high-stress conditions without the benefit of modern electronic pressure controls.

PRODUCT RESOURCES

PERFORMANCE

  • High-Static Friction: Engineered without friction modifiers to ensure firm, crisp shifts in transmissions designed for high-grip fluid.

  • Thermal Endurance: Excellent oxidation resistance prevents fluid thickening and chemical breakdown during high-heat operation.

  • Cold-Start Fluidity: Maintains reliable pumpability in low temperatures to ensure immediate hydraulic pressure at startup.

PROTECTION

  • Anti-Wear Shield: Fortified with specialized additives that protect gears, bushings, and thrust washers from mechanical fatigue.

  • Corrosion Defense: Provides a robust chemical barrier against rust and corrosion of copper-containing alloys.

  • Seal Compatibility: Specifically formulated to maintain the integrity of legacy elastomeric seals and gaskets to prevent external leaks.

UPTIME

  • Shift Integrity: Delivers the "positive shift" feel required by early Ford designs, preventing the slippage that leads to clutch burnout.

  • Varnish Control: Prevents the formation of sludge and varnish that can plug oil screens and cause valve sticking.

  • System Cleanliness: Maintains internal component cleanliness to extend the service life of vintage hydrostatic and hydraulic systems.

FEATURES & BENEFITS

  • High-Friction Formula: Delivers rapid power transfer during shift cycles in legacy Ford planetary gearsets.

  • Oxidation Stability: Resists the thermal stress of high-temperature operations in older, less efficient cooling systems.

  • Foam Resistance: Engineered to maintain a stable hydraulic stream, preventing air entrainment and spongy shifting.

  • Multi-Use Versatility: Suitable for use in power steering units and specific farm equipment hydrostatic drives.

  • Classic Compatibility: Safe for use in Borg-Warner automatic transmissions and older Ford power steering units.

APPLICATIONS

  • Service-fill for Ford automatic transmissions manufactured prior to 1977 (and select 1977-1981 models).

  • Hydrostatic drive systems and hydraulic systems on select agricultural and farm equipment.

  • Older Ford power steering units requiring an ESW-M2C33-F specification.

  • Racing transmissions (Drag Racing) where a "firm shift" and high friction coefficient are desired.

Licenses & Approvals:
  • Meets Ford ESW-M2C33-F (Obsolete Specification)

  • Suitable for use in Borg-Warner automatic transmissions where Type F is specified.

MAMMOTH TECHNICAL TIP:

Do not confuse Type F with Dexron/Mercon fluids. Modern transmissions use friction modifiers to allow for "controlled slip" during a shift to improve passenger comfort. Type F is a "high-friction" fluid; if you put this in a modern transmission, the shifts will be violently harsh and can cause mechanical shock to the drivetrain. Conversely, if you put a friction-modified Dexron fluid into a classic C4 or C6 Ford transmission, the clutches will slip excessively, generating massive heat and leading to a "burnt" transmission in short order. This is a critical distinction for classic car restoration and legacy farm equipment maintenance.
